BLACK VELVET CAKE

with chocolate hazelnut frosting

THE INGREDIENTS

- sugar - buttermilk & milk - oil - eggs - vanilla - flour - baking soda - salt - black cocoa powder - butter - chocolate hazelnut spread - powdered sugar

MAKE THE BATTER

1. Whisk together the sugar, buttermilk, oil, eggs, & vanilla. 2. Add the flour, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. 3. Whisk just until the batter comes together.

BAKE THE CAKES

1. Line 3 cake pans with parchment. 2. Divide the batter between the cake pans. Smooth. 3. Bake the cakes just until an inserted toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.

WHIP THE FROSTING

1. Beat the butter & chocolate hazelnut spread. 2. Add the cocoa powder & mix until smooth. 3. Mix in the powdered sugar, salt, & milk. Whip until the frosting is fluffy.

ASSEMBLE THE CAKE

1. Layer the cake into 3 tiers with frosting in-between each layer. 2. Frost the outside of the cake. 3. Decorate & enjoy!

TIP!

Make sure to use black cocoa powder for the signature black color without food coloring. You can get it online or in some well-stocked grocery stores!

CAN I MAKE THIS CAKE GLUTEN FREE?

Yes! To make this a gluten-free black velvet cake, just use a 1-for-1 gluten-free flour replacement instead of regular all-purpose flour.

CAN I MAKE BLACK VELVET CUPCAKES?

Sure! This recipe will make enough batter for 16 standard cupcakes. The frosting will easily make enough for all of the cupcakes as well!
