My Halloween snack mix is a must-make for a spooky party or Halloween dessert table! It’s loaded with toffee-coated Chex, Bugles, pretzels, festive cookies, and M&Ms for a sweet, salty, and chocolatey snack situation. And it’s super cute, so everyone will love to see it at your annual Halloween party. Try scooping the mix into cute bags for sharing with friends. (It’s like trick-or-treating for adults, but better!)

Not to be *that* girl, but the second the calendar hits September 1, it’s Halloween. But let’s be honest, if my Halloween chips and artichoke dip or this party-ready Halloween charcuterie board are any indication, I think you already knew that. I love a spooky recipe and we have to enjoy the little things in life, ya know?

Anyways, my goal with this recipe was to make a more grown-up version of classic party mix. That isn’t to say that kids wouldn’t love it, but the toffee, maple, and extra dose of salt make this mix a little more complex. With some Oreos, chocolate shortbread, and M&Ms, you’ll keep going back for handful after handful.

The coating is similar to my autumn snack mix, but a bit simpler. It has dark brown sugar, salted butter, and vanilla to make it more candy-like. But of course, if you wanted to add some cinnamon or swap the maple syrup with honey, that would be delicious!

P.S. As a trained pastry chef, it’s pretty rare that I use completely store-bought ingredients, but it totally works in this recipe. But if you wanted to be extra and swap the store-bought cookies for extra mini M&M cookies or even these mini sprinkle cookies, it would be lit.

Bake then mix

We are going to toss all of our salty snacks (Bugles, Chex, and pretzels) in the most delicious toffee-like sauce. But you will need to dry it out in the oven before you add the other ingredients. Once the mix is completely cool, you can mix in the other goodies like cookies, chocolates, etc.

A white pan of melted butter on a white counter.
Start by gently melting the salted butter in a large skillet.
A hand using a rubber spatula to mix butter and brown sugar in a white pan.
Then, mix in the brown sugar, maple syrup, vanilla, & Kosher salt.
Rows of Bugles, Chex, and pretzels.
Layer the Bugles, Chex, and pretzels on a parchment-lined sheet pan.
Rows of Bugles, Chex, and pretzels coated in toffee.
Drizzle the toffee mixture over the snacks and mix it super well! Bake at 250ยฐF (120ยฐC) for 45-50 minutes.

Once the snacks are completely cool, mix in the Halloween Oreos (or whatever cookies) and M&Ms.

You can serve this party mix right away, or you can store it in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

If the toffee doesn’t completely coat the snacks at first, don’t stress! It will continue to melt in the oven, so you can mix it in more as the snacks are baking.

More toffee coating

I tested this recipe as written and with a thicker toffee coating. Since this mix has cookies and chocolate, I liked the version with less toffee. It’s a bit saltier, which is so delicious!

But if you like a thicker coating, you can make 1 1/2 batches of the toffee sauce. Just use 3/4 cup salted butter, 3/4 cup packed brown sugar, 3 Tablespoons maple syrup, 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 3/4 teaspoon Kosher salt.

Yield: 12 servings
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 50 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour
This sweet and salty Halloween snack mix is a must-have at your annual Halloween party! It features toffee-coated Chex, Bugles, and pretzels with festive cookies and M&Ms for a crunchy, cute, and crowd-pleasing party snack. Even better, you can make it well in advance because it lasts for up to 2 weeks. (If you can wait that long!)

Ingredients

  • 4 cups Bugles (140 grams)
  • 4 cups corn or rice Chex cereal (120 grams)
  • 2 cups Halloween pretzels or mini twists (80 grams)
  • 1/2 cup good salted butter I use Kerrygold (115 grams)
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar light or dark (100 grams)
  • 2 Tablespoons pure maple syrup (30 milliliters)
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt I use Diamond
  • 16 Halloween cookies roughly chopped, see notes
  • 1/2 cup Halloween M&Ms or Reese's Pieces (120 grams)

Equipment

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 250ยฐF (120ยฐC). Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Then, mix the Bugles, Chex cereal, and pretzels on the prepared sheet pan. Set aside.
  • Next, melt the salted butter in a saucepan. Add the brown sugar, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir well and let the mixture bubble for about 1 minute.
  • Immediately pour the butter-brown sugar mixture evenly over the snack mix. Use a rubber spatulaย or clean hands to mix everything together until all of the snack mix is well coated in the butter mixture. Taste and add more salt if needed.
  • Spread the snack mix into an even layer on the sheet pan. Bake for 45-50 minutes, tossing it well every 10 minutes, until it's completely dry to the touch.
  • Once the snack mix is dry, remove the pan from the oven and let it cool completely. Then, mix in the chopped cookies and M&Ms. Enjoy!

Notes

If the toffee doesn’t completely coat the snacks at first, don’t stress! It will continue to melt in the oven, so you can mix it in more as the snacks are baking.
For this recipe, I used a mix of Halloween Oreos and Halloween Keebler Fudge Stripes. But if you want to be extra and swap the store-bought cookies for extra mini M&M cookies or even these mini sprinkle cookies, it would be so good.

Store this mix in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. You can also scoop it into bags and gift it, but prep the bags the night before so the mix doesn’t go stale.
