I’ve made a lot of pigs in a blanket in my day, but these air fryer ones are by far the easiest and quickest! All you need are three ingredients (plus some optional toppings if you’re in the mood) for an amazing appetizer that comes together in about 20 minutes. With hot honey mustard dip, these are always the first snack to go at every party I bring them to!

“Sara, we’re tired of hearing about how much you hate hot dogs.” I know, I know. Do you think I like telling this to people? I say I hate hot dogs, and people’s jaws drop open the same way mine does when someone tells me they don’t like cheese.

But if there is one exception in this life, it’s little smokies. Because, don’t ask me why, but they’re different! But I mean, who knows, maybe it’s just because they’re wrapped up in carbs and dipped in ketchup. Who’s to say?

All I know is that if I bring a platter of pigs to a party, people gasp, and they’re seriously gone in minutes. But recently, I decided to try them in an air fryer because I was in a hurry and my oven was taking too long to heat up. And just like my other air fryer appetizers, like chicken meatballs or crispy BBQ chicken wings, these are fire.

All you need is an egg, mini sausages, and crescent rolls. (When I was in pastry school, I learned how to make crescent dough from scratch, but these days, I always use store-bought lol. It’s not that serious!!) Then you just pop them in the air fryer or freeze them for later, and you have a three-ingredient app that comes together in less than 20 minutes. Hooray!

Crescent rolls

Two rolls of crescent rolls on a beige table.

In my normal pigs recipe, I use puff pastry. But this time, I thought I’d go super classic with it, and I’m so glad I did! I honestly forgot how good crescent rolls are, but they’re so buttery and flaky. You can use any crescent rolls here, but I typically go with the Trader Joe’s version, because I think they taste a little better.

Something I have noticed is that the Trader Joe’s rolls cook more quickly than bigger brands like Pillsbury. Just keep a close eye to make sure they don’t burn!

Make these in 20 minutes

A hand using a pizza cutter to cut rolls on a wood board.
Start by cutting the rolls into 3 strips each. I like to use a pizza cutter, it makes it so easy!
A hand rolling a mini sausage in dough on a wood board.
Then, roll the sausages in the dough strips, starting at the widest end of each strip.
A pastry brush brushing egg wash on raw pigs in a blanket.
Brush the tops of the rolls with egg wash. Try not to get the bottoms, though, or they’ll stick!

To keep the pigs from getting soggy, I like to dry off the sausages first. Just use a paper towel to quickly pat the sausages dry and remove any extra moisture.

If you want to add any toppings, sprinkle them on top now. I like sesame seeds or black pepper!

Air fry the pigs at 350°F (177°C) for 4-5 minutes, flipping them halfway through cooking.

Serve the pigs right away with hot honey mustard (recipe below!), ketchup, or whole grain mustard.

Freeze & fry later

My favorite hack is to keep a stash of these pigs in the freezer for last-minute get-togethers. (Or when I run out of time to make an app, which happens more regularly than I’d like to admit lol.)

Just place the pigs on a parchment-lined sheet pan and freeze until solid. Then, pop the frozen pigs in a zipper bag and freeze for up to 3 months. You can air fry these straight from the freezer! Just keep in mind that you might need to add 1-2 minutes to the cook time.

Easy Air Fryer Pigs in a Blanket

Yield: 24 pigs in a blanket
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
I've made a lot of pigs in a blanket in my day, but these air fryer ones are by far the easiest and quickest! All you need are three ingredients and 20 minutes for a flaky, buttery appetizer that will be gone in minutes. I like to serve these with a homemade hot honey mustard, but they're also great with ketchup, beer cheese dip, or whole grain mustard!

Ingredients

Pigs in a Blanket

  • 24 little smokies sausages beef or pork
  • 8 ounces crescent rolls (225 grams/1 regular package)
  • 1 egg
  • Sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning for sprinkling – optional
  • Cooking spray or neutral oil for greasing

Hot Honey Mustard

  • 1/4 cup hot honey or store-bought (85 milliliters)
  • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard (60 grams)
  • 1/2 cup good quality mayonnaise (120 grams)
  • 1 Tablespoon red wine or apple cider vinegar (15 milliliters)
  • 1-2 teaspoons hot sauce to taste

Equipment

  • Air fryer

Instructions

Pigs in a Blanket

  • First, use paper towels or a clean linen to pat the little smokies dry. You want to remove as much moisture as possible, or the pigs will be soggy. Set aside.
  • Unroll the crescent roll dough on a clean surface. Separate the dough along the perforated lines, so you have 8 individual dough triangles. Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut each dough triangle lengthwise into 3 narrow strips of dough. You should 24 dough strips total.
  • Place a sausage at the wide end of one of the dough strips. Roll the sausage towards the pointed end, sealing the dough well so it doesn't pop open in the air fryer. Repeat this process with the remaining sausages and dough until you have 24 pigs in a blanket.
  • Next, whisk the egg with 1 Tablespoon of water in a small bowl. Use a pastry brush to brush the top of the dough with egg wash. (Try to avoid the bottoms, or they'll stick to the air fryer basket.) Sprinkle with sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning, if using.
  • Grease the basket of an air fryer with cooking spray or neutral oil. Place the pigs in a blanket in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving a little space between each. (You may need to work in batches if your air fryer is small.)
  • Air fry the pigs in a blanket at 350°F (177°C) for 4-5 minutes, flipping them 180° halfway through, until the pastry is golden-brown. Serve them immediately with hot honey mustard, whole grain mustard, and/or ketchup. Enjoy!

Hot Honey Mustard

  • In a small bowl, add the hot honey, Dijon mustard, mayonnaise, vinegar, and hot sauce. Whisk until smooth. Taste and add more hot honey, mustard, or hot sauce if needed.

Notes

You can also use mini hot dogs if you like.
If you’re not sprinkling anything on top of the pigs in a blanket, feel free to skip the egg wash. It makes the dough shiny and pretty, but it’s not 100% necessary.
If you’re working in batches, place the air-fried pigs in a blanket on a sheet pan and keep them warm in the oven at 170°F (77°C) while you fry the rest.
Air fryers can vary, so keep an eye on the pigs. You may need to bake them for as little as 3 minutes or as long as 6 minutes.
The nutrition info does not include any toppings or the hot honey mustard.
